Jim’s Tip of the Week: Be Authentic

Eddie George won a Heisman Trophy at Ohio State and enjoyed a long NFL career. Social media didn’t exist for much of his time in the spotlight, but he’s still reaping benefits on social long after playing his last down of football.

His advice for athletes looking to grow their personal brands: Be authentic.

“On the surface, it’s simple. You are building your core audience, your consumers, right there on the spot. I’m pretty sure that if I had the career today that I had back then, I would probably have a million followers,” George told Influencer (INFLCR) founder and CEO Jim Cavale. “That’s a million followers who are going to listen to what I say, do what I do, buy what I buy, and pretty much listen to what I say and hold it as true. …

“If you are looking at it from a business perspective, it serves you to really filter what you are saying and putting out there. What are you saying? What are you promoting? … “

“Stay true to who you are,” George continued. “I don’t like it when someone does it just to put on a circus if it’s not who you are. If you are authentic, people will come and follow because of that authenticity, not because of something that’s fabricated or something that you think is cute and doesn’t have longevity that’s sustainable.”
