College athletes: Seize your moment on social media

By Jim Cavale

The stage is set. The season is here — both literally and digitally.

You’ve got to understand the reality that the fans out there this season, they’re leaving their TVs and ESPN for their phones and your social-media channels. You are ESPN. You are your own network of social channels. And that creates a tremendous opportunity for you while you are in the spotlight that is college football.

Will you be ready for your big moment?

Your character is all you’ve got when you leave your college football program. And it’s tangible on your social media accounts. What you show is important. You can leverage your college experience into a following that can help you for the rest of your life. Your smartphone is either going to be a weapon of mass destruction, or a weapon of mass production.

You’re going to make plays. You’re going to win games. But you’ve got to be ready for the moment. When it happens, what will people find? Because they will search for you. They will follow you. And they will make judgments about you based on what they see. Coaches may say it all happens on the field, that you’ve just got to win — it solves everything. That’s true, but it’s not enough because you can win every game but if you aren’t responsible on your social media, people will find it and they will tear your team down.

So the stage is set. The season is here. And the attention and eyeballs are on each on you. Use it responsibly. Use it as a weapon of mass production.

Tell your story and build your brand so that this isn’t the peak of your life, but the launching point.
